HI Summer Preview
What's on at the hostels this summer?

HI-Vancouver Jericho BeachBeachside HI-Vancouver Jericho Beach is open for summer 2008 and it's now fully equipped with wireless internet in every room. The TV room is newly renovated and the on-site cafe is feeding bellies at a good price.

All three Vancouver hostels are geared up for another summer full of activities. Erik's Capilano and Lynn Valley tours continue to wow guests and he got yet another shout out from Lonely Planet in the latest edition of their Canada Lynn Valleyguide. Trips to Bowen Island are in the works and sports fans will enjoy hostel trips to Vancouver Canadians baseball games and BC Lions football games. Their seasons start in mid-June. Stay tuned to the Vancouver Activities website for dates and prices.

HI-WhistlerUp the Sea to Sky Highway, HI-Whistler is sitting pretty on the shores of Alta Lake, ready for a summer of lake swimming, canoeing and mountain gazing. Nothing beats summertime dips in the lake and HI-Whistler's very own dock leaves you with only one important question - Will it be a swan dive, a cannon ball or a bellyflop this time?

HI-PentictonB.C.'s Okanagan loves summer and if you're after long, hot, sunny days, this is the place to be. HI-Penticton is a few blocks from Okanagan Lake where you can lounge about, go on a boat cruise and take in the rays. Penticton's summers are full of festivals so there's tons of après-beach fun in store.

HI-Banff Alpine CentreThe Rockies have been hit with a bit of late-season winter action but it's just there to make you reallllly want HI-Jaspersummer. It's on its way and when it does come, it'll set the stage for awesome rafting, hiking and biking opportunities. Get rafting packages at HI-Banff Alpine Centre or go on bike tours from HI-Jasper. For hiking enthusiasts, check out HI-Kananaskis Wilderness Hostel's mountain hikes series this summer.

What's your hostel history like?
My first hostel stay since 1970(!) was in 2005 at the Jericho Hostel while sailing on English Bay. I loved the experience and wish Jericho was open all year long. I have now used hostels in Lake Louise, Melbourne, Sydney, Kangaroo Island, Dublin and all around Ireland for ten days...the Dingle Peninsula being a highlight.

We have renewed our memberships and will be hostelling in New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia again in the fall of 2008. We did think we might be the only boomers in the facilities and to our pleasure met many peers and young families everywhere… it enriched our travels immensely. We are hooked!

Describe your most memorable travel moment.
Reading about, seeing and digesting the sunset over the Blasket Islands in Ireland and the Dingle Peninsula.

What countries have you travelled to?
Canada, USA, Britain, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Croatia, Australia, Poland, Mexico, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Slovenia

What was your longest trip and where did you go?
Europe for three months

What's your favourite HI hostel? Ireland Hostel
Dingle Peninsula, Ireland overlooking the Blasket Islands. [ed. note - it's HI-Ireland's Dun Chaoin Hostel!]

Where do you want to go next?
We are off to the South Pacific in the fall....Hawaii, New Caledonia, Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia

What's your best advice for a first-time backpacker?
Travel light!

What can you never travel without?
My sense of humour!

Any other stories or advice you want to share?
We met a senior couple from Australia who were having a "Gap Year" working and travelling just like their three adult children had been doing... We are planning one!
